The old Palace Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand, built in the 1860s was demolished overnight by Auckland Council in November due to fears of its structural instability. The building was being converted to a brothel by Michael Chow who has threatened legal action over its demolition.

"If someone come round your house without giving you any consultation and they pulled your house down within two hours, what do you feel? I never gave consent for the demolition, so pretty much I'm gutted and moving forward they will probably receive legal action from me," said Chow to TVNZ reporters.

The Historic Places Trust had been working with an architect and the building's owners, during its conversion into a brothel. They welcomed a council investigation into how it was damaged because there were now all too few character corner buildings left.
